Newportopoly© announces its Tenth Anniversary Edition, pictured above, now in local stores. The board game was developed in 2014 by The Choir School of Newport County as a fundraiser for its international educational travel fund. While hardly a new concept, a property trading game such as this is developed by locals who know the community it benefits. It is manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio by Late for the Sky Production Company, which since 1984 has designed and manufactured property trading games based on cities and communities. The Tenth Anniversary edition of 1500 limited copies of Newportopoly© benefits the Choir School's 2024 educational trip to South America. The first two editions, of 500 and 1500 copies respectively, generated $50,000 for our 2018 educational tour to England. A pandemic delayed this third edition by over two years.
Who’s on the board? On the board (in the order of game play) are these area businesses and iconic institutions which have sponsored the game’s production cost by purchasing their property spaces, permitting retail sales of the game to benefit the Choir School. Certain spots that cannot be sponsored directly by institutions for various reasons are instead sponsored by individuals or foundations connected to the cause of the space involved. The 2024 Tenth Anniversary Edition contains: RI Turnpike and Bridge Authority (START space); DJ Bells; Harborside Inn; Goat Island (sponsored by Newport Harbor Island Resort); Church of St. John the Evangelist; Zelda’s; The Lobster Bar; The Landing; Forster Orthodontics (in an original adaptation, this doctor takes the place of Jail on the board—as it does in the minds of some patients—while in the “Go to Jail” space one reads “Find your way to a beautiful smile...Go visit Forster Orthodontics” and, naturally, there is a Get out of an Orthodontist Visit Free card); Coffee Grinder; Newport Classical; Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad; Hair Apparent; Emmanuel Church; Cardines Field (Morfar in honor of his singing sluggers); Jailhouse Inn; Brick Market Museum and Shop (Newport Historical Society); Seamen’s Church Institute; Newport Public Library; Newport Housing Authority; Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty; Province Mortgage Associates; The Dowd Team Keller Williams Realty; Touro Synagogue; St. Michael’s Country Day School; The Pennfield School; Arts and Cultural Alliance of Newport County; Thompson Middle School; Newport Art Museum; The Redwood Library & Athenæum; Yankee Peddler Inn; International Tennis Hall of Fame; Trinity Church; Cliff Walk (Linda Waldron in memory of John Rives); Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center; The Breakers (Preservation Society of Newport County).
A 60 word description of the institution on each property space is found on the back of each deed card, and fun touches abound in the two decks of special cards in the center of the board which either advance tokens to specific spaces, cause payments to be made to the bank, or generate gifts to be received. The “railroad” spaces are occupied by four Houses of Worship: Touro Synagogue, and the three Episcopal churches of Newport which originally combined to form The Choir School, now an independent 501(c)3 non-profit institution.
The six metal tokens are sponsored by the Newport Yacht Club (a sailboat), Audrain Automobile Museum (an antique car); Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad (a train engine); Run Newport (a running shoe); Members of The Point Association (the Green Light lighthouse on Goat Island); and Forster Orthodontics (the Newport Bridge).
Audrain Automobile Museum is featured on the center of the board (occupied in the last edition by Newport Opera House). Houses and Mansions are again insured by Carey, Richmond & Viking Insurance. The game is additionally sponsored by a gift in memory of Harold Petty Arnold.
We look forward to the continued fun of this game! And, we invite interested children ages 8-14 to audition for the Choir School’s division heading to Argentina to partner with local youth choir and orchestra students (see: El Sistema) in August, 2024, directly supported by the proceeds from Newportopoly©.
